I hired myself!

What does that mean? Well, I think about it like this. When you are looking for work, you are actively building your promo kit. This includes your resume, cover letters, references, putting together a wardrobe, getting your social media fully up-to-date and maybe even a website to fully advertise “You”. You are also setting up meetings, going to networking events & even joining a network group or two. You’ve put yourself out there & you need to….and not just when you are looking for a job.

Hiring yourself & never fire yourself. Most folks fire themselves after they get that cool job or career in place. The idea of self-promotion gets put on the shelf. They just stop! There is no such thing as job security anymore. Companies are downsizing & people are suddenly out of work-with little to no notice. The ones that have maintained a full promo kit tend to find work fast as others who have not kept their resume and connections current can get lost in the shuffle when suddenly they have to look for work. You need to keep an eye on the market at all times. You need to stay up-to-date on your social media & always be mindful of how you are seen in the public eye. By keeping up on all these areas you will always have a back-up plan.

Something else to think about is having a rainy day fund. It’s important to try and build up at least 3-6 months’ worth of money in your savings to cover your bills. You don’t know if you will be able to claim unemployment and if so, how much it will pay. You also don’t know how fast you will find work. Keeping a fund like this will create a cushion to rest on while you concentrate on finding a new job. Along with this, be mindful of your spending habits. “Coupon” is not a bad word. A well-balanced budget will also keep your head straight. While money does make the world go round, having a safety net of savings will allow you to concentrate on finding the job, not worrying if you will lose your house or how to pay the electric bill.

Hiring yourself is a big job. You are your own boss and the employee. You have to think about keeping “You” in line. The important thing here is that work is a part of life and it is always good to be ready for anything. Jobs will come and go but you will always need to be prepared. The following things should always be a kept current: Resume, social media, contacts/connections & reputation. Referrals will happen when these things are up-to-date and ready to go!
